SPANISH LAKE, MO (KMOX) - How about walking through fields of sunflowers to escape from the world?

The Missouri Department of Conservation says the sunflower plots at Columbia Bottom Conservation Area in North St. Louis County have been so popular, they planted more this year.

Last year floodwaters prevented planting, but this year MDC staff were able to get the giant blooms to grow on more than a dozen fields.

The practice is actually part of management for mourning doves and the September dove hunting season.  But families have been flocking to the site in Spanish Lake to escape and get spectacular pictures.
