GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOX) - Granite City and U.S. Steel Company officials are preparing for Thursday's visit by President Donald Trump. The president is expected to talk trade in light of the return of 800 jobs at the steel mill.

“We’re just really glad that we’re seeing change, and that we’re able to produce something that really helps our country there," says James Amos, Granite City Economic Development director.

Amos says behavior by China has hurt the regional economy, but he says he's glad Granite City is in the national spotlight as a steel town where companies can do good business for logistical reasons.

“For example, we have six of the seven Class One railroads right here in Granite City. There’s only one other place in the United States that has all of the Class One railroads come together, and that’s Chicago, but they all seven come right here through the East St. Louis area,” Amos says.

Trump becomes the second president to visit Granite City. President Jimmy Carter visited in November of 1980, and Senator John F. Kennedy brought his presidential campaign to Granite City in October of 1960.
