HBO Releases West Lake Landfill Documentary

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - HBO has released a documentary on the radioactive waste at West Lake Landfill and its effect on the communities it surrounds.

Dawn Chapman, of the Just Moms advocacy group, had to leave the room, packed with supporters, because she says the film "Atomic Homeland" was so well done, she was reliving her experiences.

She hopes other people in her situation see the film.

"Even if it's not radioactive waste, maybe it's dioxin or something else, I hope that somebody from those communities sees this and maybe feels a bit more empowered, maybe feels a bit more that, like David and Goliath battles can be won by ordinary citizens," Chapman says.

As she says in the film, people in these situations have to be their own superheroes -- but at the same time, Chapman hopes the film will help connect and bond those communities.
