ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The Illinois Department of Transportation has awarded $36 million in federal grants to communities statewide, including several in the Metro East.

IDOT spokeswoman Gianna Urgo says the money is available through the department's Transportation Enhancement Program.

“It’s one of the most popular and highly competitive grants that IDOT participates in and it’s extremely important to focus on the local level and improve options for residents and in turn improve their quality of life,” she says.

Metro East communities are getting 3.4 million dollars. Columbia, Wood River, Millstadt and Highland will use their share for streetscape projects. Edwardsville is getting 943-thousand dollars to work on a bike and pedestrian path along Route 157.
