Ill. Lawmakers Pass Medical Marijuana Alternative for Pain Medication

June 01, 2018 - 10:23 am

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KMOX) - Patients prescribed pain medications may have another option besides potentially addictive opioids.

Illinois lawmakers passed a bill letting someone who's been prescribed opioids for their pain to get a medical marijuana card as an alternative.

State Rep. Kelly Cassidy says they hope to curb the opioid epidemic.

“States that provide access to medical cannabis see a sharp decrease in the number of opioid prescriptions that are utilized,” she says.

Those hoping to wean themselves off painkillers would also be eligible.

The governor now has to sign it.
