ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - There's a "200th birthday" coin design competition in Illinois.

State treasurer Mike Frerichs says they received 29 entries and a committee whittled that number down to five finalists.

“We had lots of people from the state of Illinois submit designs, we had a lot of staff whittle it down to the top five. We’re now letting the public chose which coin design will be minted on our commemorative medallion to honor our bicentennial,” he says.

One of the designs features a Cardinal.

The winning entry will be minted on one side of the bicentennial coin. The other? the Illinois state seal.
