Illinois Celebrates Bicentennial with Official Tequila

May 07, 2018 - 9:32 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Illinois is celebrating its 200th birthday year, and the state's official Bicentennial Tequila.

Governor Bruce Rauner announced at a Mexican restaurant in Chicago that "El Nacimiento," imported from Mexico is getting that designation.

Rauner says its importer is an Illinois-based small business with Latino roots.

“Mexican Americans are leaders in the arts, in education, in business, in law, in medicine, in every aspect in the quality of our life and improving the futures for everyone in Illinois, Mexican Americans are the way,” he says.

Rauner says "El Nacimiento" is available for purchase online.

Two thousand special-edition, Illinois-shaped bottles of seven-year-aged "Extra Anejo" are being made for bicentennial release.
