Illinois Cops "Ride Across Illinois" for Fallen Officers

July 19, 2018 - 10:38 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - In Alton this morning, dozens of police officers will begin a bike ride to Chicago, and it's not just for fun. It's the ILL Cops "Ride Across Illinois".

The four day ride that starts with the officers dipping their bikes' tires in the Mississippi River is an annual fundraiser.

“It supports children of fallen officers who go to Cops Kids Camp, which is a camp only for children who have lost a parent in the line of duty. It also sends siblings and coworkers and spouses to different retreats to help them cope with the loss," says Granite City Lt. Jenna DeYoung.

DeYoung says they stop along the way, read from the 'Officer Down' memorial page, meet their families, and celebrate their lives. They ride 100 to 120 miles a day and arrive at the Gold Star Memorial in Chicago on Sunday.
