Illinois Fails to Pass Gambling Bill

June 01, 2018 - 6:50 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) -  No cheering from a Metro-East racetrack as Illinois legislators fail to pass a gambling expansion bill this session.

Fairmount Park operators in Collinsville had hoped for passage of Senate Bill Seven, which would have created what some call "racinos." That's adding slot machines at horse racing venues across Illinois.

Bill sponsor state representative Bob Rita says he needs more time to resolve disputes.

“It appears there’s a number of issues, not just one or two; the city of Chicago’s in opposition, there’s sweepstakes, there’s tax rates, so what we’re going to do is work together over the summer and out some hearings together,” he says.

Rita says they may also discuss topics not included in the original bill, such as fantasy sports betting.
