Illinois Gambling Bill Gains New Support

August 23, 2018 - 7:24 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The push to allow slot machines at Illinois horse racing tracks - like nearby Fairmount Park - is getting a new endorsement.

Former Governor Jim Edgar told the Chicago Sun Times yesterday that he's changed his mind about gambling expansion in the state. The downstate Illinois Republican says there are now "more plusses than minuses" than there were 25 years ago when he spoke out about land-based casinos.

Edgar says the city of Chicago could use the revenue - and the state could too.  An Illinois House subcommittee is receiving more testimony about possible gambling expansion.

Among other things, the measure would create six new casinos, including one in Chicago; expand existing riverboats; and allow for increased winnings on video gambling. It also would allow more forms of gambling- including slot machines- at race tracks.
