Illinois Governor Signs Bill to Help Wolf Branch Rebuild

August 02, 2018 - 8:49 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner has signed a law to make it easier for a Metro East middle school to rebuild.

Wolf Branch Middle School in Swansea had to close in September because an abandoned coal mine beneath it started collapsing. Over the past year, parts of the school have sunk more than two feet -- half the building has to be demolished. The newly signed law lets the school district extend its debt limit to cover necessary repairs; the Illinois Department of Natural Resources also says it's looking for federal money and other grants to help prevent the mine from collapsing further.
