Illinois Higher Education Looks at Splitting Illinois Universities

May 18, 2018 - 9:43 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Illinois lawmakers are asking the state's Board of Higher Education to look into whether Southern Illinois University's two flagship campuses should split and operate independently.

The issue came to a head this week after an email from SIU Chancellor Randy Dunn was made public. He called some on the Carbondale campus opposed to a money reallocation idea "bitchers." The plan would have moved $5 million from Carbondale's budget to Edwardsville's to help offset falling enrollment in Carbondale and growing enrollment in Edwardsville.

In a statement, several Metro East lawmakers say they simply want the idea investigated -- the two campuses have very similar enrollment, with Edwardsville on pace to eclipse Carbondale.
