Industrial Hemp Bill Moves Forward in Illinois

ST. LOUIS (KMOX)- The use of industrial hemp is another step closer to being legalized in Illinois.

Advocates such as Tabitha Tripp with the Southern Illinois Growers Network say the bill makes an important distinction between hemp and marijuana.

“There is a lot of stigma attached to medical marijuana and cannabis so it’s very important that people understand industrial hemp. We’re talking about industrial hemp for food, fiber and fuel,” she says.

She says hemp has the power to rejuvenate a stagnant rural economy by providing another crop for southern Illinois farmers to grow.

The measure legalizing industrial hemp has passed the Illinois Senate and now moves onto the House for consideration.  The measure takes hemp out of the "noxious weed" category and clearly distinguishes it from marijuana.
