ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Safety investigators say a work box in an elevator shaft at a downtown construction site crashed on its first use -- two workers died in the accident Monday.

The men were working from a basket suspended by a cable inside the elevator shaft at 1501 Washington Ave., when the cable snapped.

The company in charge of demolition at the building, Gencorp Services, said both men killed had decades of experience on the job and were trained.

Police said Wednesday that the victims were 44-year-old Joey Hale and 58-year-old Ben Ricks, both of St. Louis.

Gencorp says it appears the work box that crashed to the ground had not yet been used.

St. Louis' public safety director says the city inspected the work site 10 days before the accident and didn't find any issues.

A new investigation is underway.
