Jefferson Barracks Cemetery Denies Overcrowding Claims

June 20, 2018 - 7:09 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Jefferson Barracks Cemetery is denying reports on social media that it’s about to run out of burial space.

As another funeral motorcade arrives at Jefferson Barracks, only seven acres of the 355 acre cemetery are untouched by the gravediggers shovel. Cemetery Director Ame Callahan says more land is one the way.

“At the current rate on internment, it will take us all the way out to 2028,” she says.

Callahan says with the acquisition of ten more acres soon from JB hospital next year, they'll have a ten-year cushion. And if they can close on a deal to get another 33 acres, the cemetery will be unfilled for a total of 40 years.

“I want to reassure the public that NCA will do everything in their [power] to make sure that we have enough burial space or our veterans and eligible family,” she says.
