Jefferson County Council Votes on Desoto Police Assistance

July 09, 2018 - 9:53 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A step that could eventually lead to the Jefferson County Sheriff's department taking over law enforcement in Desoto could be taken tonight when the county council is presented an agreement for the city to pay for the help the county is providing the Desoto Police Department that is short-staffed and on the verge of having its 8th chief in 15 years.

The county began providing the service last week, and while Sheriff Dave Marshak admits that helping Desoto does impact the county, his responsibility for county-wide law enforcement demands that he addresses the situation.

"Good policing for the city of Desoto is good policing for Jefferson County, so bear with us for a little bit as we get through this and I think it’s probably going to head in the right direction,” he says.

Marshak believes that direction is Desoto contracting with his department for policing. But, he says, that will be up to the city. Marshak says he will be offering the city a few other options.

“In the situation that they are in, we will probably provide a minimum standard of staffing for what they are currently paying for law enforcement services,” he says.
