Vitale: Blues Need More From Defensemen to Help Jake Allen

Every Wednesday at 8:15 a.m., Vitale joins KMOX to talk about the latest storylines in Blues hockey.

St. Louis Blues radio analyst Joey Vitale has noticed that Jake Allen is taking a lot of flack after the first two games have resulted in a winless start to the season. But Vitale says it's unwarranted.

"You look at some great goalies around the league, Tukka Rask, Marc-Andre Fluery, Matt Murry, all debuting with five goals against," Vitale says. "The reason for that is teams still have a few bad habits from the summer, they're not really honed in on those yet, they're not being tough to play against yet and that's very evident here with the St. Louis Blues."

Allen has allowed all 10 of the Blues goals against thus far, but Vitale says that also falls on the defensemen.

"The defensive zone needs to be cleaned up quite a bit," Vitale says. "They're not being hard in front of the net, they're not being tough enough to play against. And you saw that's evident when the Jets and Chicago rolled in here and put five up in both games."

Every Wednesday at 8:15 a.m. Vitale joins KMOX to talk about the latest storylines in Blues hockey. Watch the video above to hear the full segment from this morning, with KMOX sports director Tom Ackerman and Vitale.

St. Louis is on the ice at Enterprise Center for practice on Wednesday, then will face the Calgary Flames (2-1) on Thursday night at home.

Also on Wednesday, we want to wish a happy birthday to former Blues defenseman Chris Pronger, who turns 44.
