Kansas City Victims Call for Clergy Abuse Investigation

August 22, 2018 - 10:32 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Demanding action in Missouri and Kansas, priest sex abuse victims want a comprehensive investigation into clergy misconduct and cover-ups, similar to those reported in Pennsylvania.

Among those telling their stories during a Kansas City press conference was victim Michael Sandridge.

“I was a victim in St. Elizabeth’s Parish where there were four pedophile priests in the same rectory, so multiply that with the other rectories,” he says.

An attorney representing the sex abuse victims says she came up with 230 names of priests who had targeted youth, with only a handful of them facing charges.

The executive director of the Archdiocesan Office of Child Abuse Prevention, Sandra Price, says they will work with any such investigation.

“We have always cooperated fully with the authorities in regards to investigations," Price says. "We’ve actually engaged a retired FBI agent who has helped us in the past with special skills in criminalized investigations, so we’re always happy to partner with local law enforcement if there is an investigation and that’s what will happen in the future."

Wednesday afternoon, local clergy abuse victims and their attorney will deliver a letter to Attorney General's Josh Hawley's office downtown asking that he launch a grand jury investigation into clergy abuse and cover-ups statewide.
