A Little Ice Causes a Lot of Trouble for Motorists

February 11, 2018 - 12:40 pm

Crews worked through the night, Saturday into Stunday, trying to keep major interstates clear.  Forecasters had only expected a tenth of an inch of ice overnight, but the St. Louis region was still seeing dangerously slick conditions well into the morning

"The mist that we're seeing is rather strange," explained St. Louis County Highway Department's David Wrone Sunday morning.  "It's liquid, but it's 19 degrees and those two typically don't go together but they are today."

Scores of accidents on Interstate 70 and a pile-up involving five semi's on I-44 tied up motorists overnight Saturday and into Sunday.  County crews salted roads three times over the weekend.
