ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A local pediatrician applauds the FDA's call for certain teething medications to be taken off the market.

The FDA issued warnings about teething products that contain the popular numbing ingredient Benzocaine several times before, but now it has asked manufacturers to stop selling them.

“There have been reports of illnesses and death as a result of using these teeth gels that contain benzocaine," says SLU Care's Dr. Ken Haller, pediatrician at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital. “The FDA, what it came out with was a much stronger warning and a call to take these medications off the market.”

Haller says a good alternative is to give babies teething rings with water in them, or a cold washcloth to chew on, or simply massaging their gums to relieve pain.
