Local Hospital Among the First to Use New Breast Cancer Procedure

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A local hospital is among the first in the region to use a new breast cancer technique in the operating room.

The new technology is called Magseed.

“It’s meant for people who have things on mammogram that we can’t feel yet and we definitely can't see," according to SLU Care breast surgeon Dr. Theresa Schwartz at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital.

Schwartz says they're implanting magnetic seeds in both the breast lesion and soft tissue to help map the tumor.

“It’s no bigger than a piece of rice, and in the operating room we have a probe that picks up that magnetic signal and shows us exactly where to go to remove an abnormality that’s only seen on mammogram," she says.

The magseed is the smallest non-radioactive seed available.  The FDA approved the magseed technique early last year.
