JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KMOX) - Investigators say it appears the man who died when a car fell on him early this morning was trying to steal something from under it.

Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak tells KMOX when they found 37-year-old Justin Derecskey of House Springs under the vehicle at Heads Creek Road and Ruth Drive, there was a saw stuck in the exhaust pipe.

"Based on the fact that it was 5:20 in the early morning hours, still under the cover of darkness, I have my doubts that he actually had permission from the vehicle owner," he says.

Marshak says they haven't been able to find the owner of the vehicle, which had been abandoned and had a tow sticker on a window.

Dereskey actually called 911 to report that he was under a car and couldn't breathe. By the time paramedics got there 7 minutes later, he had died.

The investigation continues.
