ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A daylight shooting in the heart of downtown -- it happened Wednesday afternoon across the street from Sugarfire Smoke House at 6th and Washington.

Downtown Police Capt. Renee Kriesmann says three people, possibly homeless, were arguing on the sidewalk.

"It appears that one shot was fired," she says. "We do have a victim that has been transported to the hospital. He was conscious at the scene - he was talking to the officers."

The man - shot in the leg - is expected to survive.

The gunman left the scene.

"We are looking for him," Kriesmann says. "We do have a decent description of him. We're checking the cameras in the area; we're hopeful to get a little bit of this on video and figure out who he is and get him into custody."

Police are calling it an "isolated incident" and say "downtown is safe."

The department website shows that through May of this year, there have been two murders total in the two downtown districts -- that's one more killing than this time last year; and 43 assaults with a gun -- also one more than this time last year.
