Metro East Unemployment Down to 3.5

June 22, 2018 - 9:54 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The unemployment rate fell in all of Illinois 14 metro areas for the third month in a row -- but not everyone added jobs.

The jobless rate was down in May across the board compared to year ago levels. Illinois Department of Employment Security spokesman Bob Gough says 11 metros added jobs, including the Metro East.

“The nice thing is when you compare it to a year ago; we are seeing improvement in many more of the downstate metros. A lot of our growth earlier was primarily fueled by Chicago,” he says.

The Metro East added 800 jobs over the year; its unemployment rate fell from 4.1 percent to 3.8. The state unemployment rate was 3.5 percent last month.
