FERGUSON, Mo. (KMOX/AP) - The mother of Michael Brown has announced she will run for Ferguson City Council.

Lezley McSpadden says she will focus on community policing, economic equality and access to health care for all.

McSpadden made the annoucement the day after the anniversary of her son's shooting death by then-Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson.

She says that after finally learning how to deal with the death of her son, she wants to make a difference in her community.

"I learned to walk again, and this is one of my first steps - running for Ferguson City Council of 2019," McSpadden announced.

She is also petitioning to the governor to reopen her son's case.

The Missouri governor's office says it can't appoint a special prosecutor to reopen the investigation into the fatal police shooting of Brown, despite pressure from Brown's mother.

McSpadden has launched an online petition seeking a new investigation into her son's 2014 death in Ferguson. The case helped spark the Black Lives Matter movement.

Republican Gov. Mike. Parson's spokeswoman said Friday that the governor "has no legal authority to appoint a special prosecutor in any case.''
