Former Cardinals manager to be adviser

UNDATED (KMOX) - Former Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has a new job.

The Kansas City Royals announced Friday they've hired the 48-year-old Matheny as a special advisor for player development, putting him in position as a possible successor to Royals manager Ned Yost.

The 64-year-old Yost has one year remaining on his contract.

Royals general manager Dayton Moore said Matheny will assist in scouting and player development, "It has always been our policy to hire the best baseball people we can, and this is the perfect example of that. Mike has contributed so much to our game as both a player and a manager and has a wealth of knowledge that can only make us better. I'm excited about the possibilities of what he'll bring to our organization."

Matheny told the job was a unique opportunity he couldn't pass up.
