ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - You can imagine the difficult things members of law enforcement witness.  For one sheriff's deputy, being approached by a homeless veteran prompted him to create a nonprofit called Mission Homes. ‘Homes’ is an acronym that stands for ‘House Our Many Extraordinary Soldiers’.

Mission Homes founder St. Louis Deputy Sheriff Shaun Gray says they spend one-on-one time with the veterans chosen to be part of the program.

“We are a nonprofit organization that offers transitional housing to homeless veterans as we prepare them for new beginnings for them,” he says.

To raise money, they are collecting used, new or gently worn shoes that are given to a microloan organization which in turn gives them a financial donation.   Shoes can be dropped off at St. Louis city hall, the police academy the sheriff's department or Caruso's Deli on 1000 Washington Avenue.

Shoes will be collected through October 6th.
