Alton, IL (KMOX) - Alton officials hope to have some relief after the Mississippi River crests there today.

"But once the waters recede we'll have another challenge, " points out Alton Public Works Director, Robert Barnhart, "water levels have been up now for some time now, two to three weeks now, and all that's going to do is deposit a lot of debris, mud and driftwood in the area and the clean-up effort's going to be very demanding."

The Mississippi cresting just a few feet below the record level set in 1993.  Barnhart says crews will need to continue to man the flood wall around the clock until the water recedes.

In St. Louis, the river has also crested and will begin to slowly drop this week.
