WASHINGTON (KMOX/AP) –  Missouri Rep. William Clay Jr. has joined two other Democratic congressmen in sponsoring a resolution to impeach President Donald Trump.

Clay announced Friday that he was signing on to a resolution with a single article of impeachment accusing Trump of attempting to obstruct the FBI investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

“Today, I have acted to assert the constitutionally mandated authority of the U.S. House to hold President Donald Trump accountable for his repeated acts of attempted obstruction of justice and his reckless contempt for the Constitution which he took an oath to preserve, protect and defend," Clay said in the statement.

"The proposed Article of Impeachment recount’s President Trump’s repeated attempts to obstruct justice in the Russia investigation, as outlined in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report. It has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee. The proposed Article of Impeachment concludes: 'Donald John Trump has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as President and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States.'"

Clay announced he also joined with Congresswoman Rashida Talib (D-Mich.) and Green to cosponsor H. Res 257: "Inquiring whether the House of Representatives should impeach Donald John Trump, President of the United States of America," which has been referred to the House Rules Committee.

Clay said impeachment is the only remedy available under the U.S. Constitution to hold Trump accountable. "Impeachment is the only constitutionally available remedy that would directly address President Trump’s blatant and repeated attempts to obstruct justice and repeatedly lied to Congress, and most importantly lied to the American people," Clay said.

"In the past, other presidents who trampled on the Rule of Law, dishonored their office, and violated their sacred oath were ultimately held accountable by the Constitution and the harsh judgement of history.

"Donald Trump is about to learn that same lesson."

The resolution (H. Res. 13: "Impeaching Donald Trump, President of the United States, for high crimes and misdemeanors.") was introduced in January by Rep. Brad Sherman of California with Rep. Al Green of Texas as a co-sponsor.

Clay represents a St. Louis-area district and is among dozens of House Democrats advocating opening an impeachment investigation.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is attempting to restrain the push for impeachment. Some Democrats fear an impeachment effort will help Trump politically.
