JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KMOX) - Police recieved calls about an erratic driver in Jefferson County on Thursday, but the man was dead before they could get there to pull him over.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KMOX they were trying to get to the car that was apparently all over the road heading southbound on Highway 21 in Hillsboro.

"We couldn't get the cars in position to try to make a traffic stop before the crash occured," Trooper Dallas Thompson says.

The crash was a violent one. The car, driven by 52-year-old Henry Rushing, crossed the center line and slammed head-on into an Ameren utility truck, spinning into another car.

The truck ran off the highway, crashing into an apartment building. Troopers say a man was sleeping just yards from the impact, but wasn't injured.

The erratic driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Trooper Dallas Thompson says the medical examiner will be looking into possible drug or alcohol involvement, though there were no outward signs.

No one else was seriously injured.

Highway 21 in Hillsboro was closed for much of the night Thursday after the violent crash.
