Modern Designs Make Restaurants Louder, Expert Says

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - If it seems like it's awfully loud when you eat out, it's not your imagination.

St. Louis shows up at No. 8 on a list of cities with the loudest restaurant environments.

The survey was done by hearing aid maker Oticon, and local audiologist Dr. Brandi Pettis says you can blame modern design trends that favor lots of steel, stone and exposed ductwork.

“They don’t have a lot of table cloths or curtains, carpeting too, or those types of things to absorb sound, so that creates a pretty noisy reverberance environment,” she says.

The noise can reach levels similar to a passing ambulance at its peak, and more like a rumbling freight train on average, making it difficult to hear those right next to you.
