ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - It's been over a year since remains found in Kinloch were identified as those of missing Berkeley 25-year-old Monica Sykes.

Now her mother, Regina Sykes is forming a charity in her daughter's name. Monica's Voice will help families of missing loved ones by serving as a liaison between them and investigators. Regina Sykes says they'll also focus on domestic violence. That decision came about when she found out after Monica's death, that her daughter had been in an abusive relationship.

"We found that out as we were going through the process of them investigating her disappearance and everything. We found out things that were quite alarming to me as a mother, so to know that and find that out and not know what was happening to my daughter,”she says.

A trial date for Ray Ellis, the man accused of murdering her, is set for September.  Sykes says justice is slow but she's not frustrated, saying they are standing strong as a family and she wants justice for her daughter.

"What I hope to accomplish is to establish resources and collaborations with other organizations that help search for missing individuals, and help that families searching for their loved ones," she says.
