Muny and City Work to Extend Lease

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The Muny at Forest Park is working on a deal to extend its lease with the city another 50 years.

Alderwoman Heather Navarro has introduced a bill that would let the Muny pay the city $1 a year rent, plus $40,000 a year to maintain the parking lots.

“The Muny is a non-profit, and I think they’re already giving the city a tremendous amount. There’s 1500 free seats at every show, and they bring in thousands of people into the city who are spending their money in the city and visiting the park,” she says.

Under the deal, the Muny will add another $10,000 every 10 years to the amount it puts in the parking lot fund, rising to a level of $65,000 a year by the end of the 50 year lease. Navarro says the Muny is also getting ready to invest $50 million to improve its facilities.

“I know over the next several years the Muny’s going to be looking to its donors, its patrons, to continue the upkeep of the Muny and I really hope for people knowing that the Muny has a commitment, the city has a long-term commitment to the Muny, that that will encourage people to continue to be generous with their giving to the Muny,” Navarro says.
