ALBERS, Ill. (KMOX) - About eighty people lost power in the Albers area of Clinton County, Saturday morning. It's the cause of the outage, not the size of it, that has Ameren-Illinois putting the word out.

Spokesman Brian Bretsch says mylar balloons from a graduation party shorted-out power lines in the area, "We definitely want people to have wonderful graduation ceremonies and holiday parties. We want them to have balloons. We just ask that if you do use the mylar balloons, please dispose of them properly. We just ask that you poke a hole in them, let the helium out, then put them in the trash."

Even if a balloon doesn't cause an outage, Bretsch points out that if it gets caught in the lines, someone has to tackle the dangerous job of going up and retrieving it from the live wires.
