NASA officials say a huge meteor exploded in the Earth's atmosphere with the force of 10 atomic bombs — and it happened just a few miles from the Earth's surface.

The meteor, which measured several meters across, exploded over the Bering Sea back in December, about 15 miles above Russia.  The blast measured 173 kilotons — for reference, the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima only measured 15 kilotons.

Researchers say a meteor of that size only reaches Earth only a handful of times every 100 years, although a similar-sized impact was registered just five years ago also in Russia.

According to BBC, NASA was given the heads-up by the U.S. Air Force, which detected the blast last year.
