Need for Technical Skills Growing, Not Enough People to Fill Jobs

May 21, 2018 - 8:53 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A St. Louis vocational school says the need for workers with technical skills is still growing -- and there still aren't enough people to fill the jobs.

Don Pohl is the executive vice president of Ranken Technical College, which just held a career fair in which 500 companies showed up competing for 900 grads, many of whom had jobs already. Pohl says skills required are constantly changing. He says if you try to recruit students as they're graduating from high school, it's often too late.

“You’ve got to start early. People are making decisions earlier and earlier, so we’re actually reaching down into the middle schools, and in some cases even earlier, and introducing them to what technical careers are,” he says.
