New Report Shows Big Increase in Suicide Rates

June 08, 2018 - 10:36 am

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A sobering new report is out about the number of suicides in the United States, including a big increase in Missouri.

In 2016 alone, 45,000 people in the U.S. took their own lives.  Nationally, the suicide rate is up 25 percent since 1999.

In Missouri, it's up 36 percent.  In Illinois, up 23 percent.

“It’s a national problem of wide scope that we need comprehensive approaches for," says CDC's Dr. Anne Schuchat.

She says the highest suicide rate is among middle-aged adults, with many more men than women committing suicide and the overwhelming method of suicide is by a firearm.
