ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - St. Louis County police are rolling out a new unit that it says will use elite officers to handle a variety of challenges.

“This is a longtime dream come true,” says County Police Chief Jon Belmar about the special response unit which he says will give county police the ability to do things you may not expect from the police.

“Problem solving, community engagement, these officers are trained in de-escalation. It is going to make the difference in maintaining St. Louis County as the safe place to live and work,” he says.

The unit’s rolling out with 16 officers, and will have 24 by the end of the year, all riding in two person cars. Belmar says the initial emphasis will be in North County but the unit will be available throughout the county, where ever it’s needed.
