ST. ANN (KMOX) -- Save-A-Lot's new headquarters in north St. Louis County isn't just desks and cubicles. It's a reflection of the changing, and increasingly digital, grocery industry.

There's an 'IT innovation lab,' to crunch big data and develop new tech tools, and a test kitchen that could develop recipes for the brand's Pinterest page.

The headquarters even boasts a model test store to give new fixtures and marketing a spin.

Chief Investment Officer Kevin Proctor says while their focus remains on improving brick and mortar stores, many of which are being renovated, "we'll also be looking at items such as click-and-collect, online shopping, deliveries and so on.

"That's all part of our roadmap as we work through our transformation."

The grocery chain with 1,300 stores nationwide has been able to recruit good employees to this region, Proctor tells KMOX News, which heavily influenced their decision to stay.

"For us, it was very much a decision around people; retaining our strong people within the business and also attracting talent for the future."

The HQ boasts benefits for employees too, like a cafe, fitness center, and yoda studio.

Save-A-Lot has a 40-year history in St. Louis. Executives looked at moving to areas like Louisville and Kansas City, but decided to stay.

"St. Louis has great services and amenities," Proctor says. "We're very close to the airport, where we're located in our office, that allows us to get out to our colleagues in the field but also allows our regional team members our come visit us really easily."

The new headquarters is located in the Crossings at Northwest, which is the redeveloped Northwest Plaza mall. Save-A-Lot occupies what used to be a J.C. Penney.
