187 people killed, more than 2,300 shot in St. Louis this year surpassing 2018 totals

The most common known motives that are driving the killings are arguments, robberies, drugs and carjackings.

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Murders in St. Louis have hit 187, surpassing last year's total with more than two weeks left of 2019. 

The number of killings is expected to go up before the end of the year and St. Louis Metropolitan Police say what is fueling it is all the shootings. More than 2,300 have been shot this year in the city, which is a 9% increase from 2018. There has also been a 5% increase in stabbings this year, up to a total of 766 stab victims.

Most of the city's 187 murder victims this year are males, at 150, and 168 of those victims are black.

The most common motive police list is "unknown," but the most common known motives that are driving the killings are arguments, robberies, drugs and carjackings.
