ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Frustration is building in the Central West End as Lindell gets shut down, again, due to water main problems.

The city's water division says water is leaking from a joint connecting a new 30-inch main -- installed last year -- and an older water main.

Local restaurateur Chris Sommers, who owns Pi Pizzeria, Gringo and others, lives across the street. He thinks lack of oversight on last year's multi-week project led to this.

"[You had> four plus different trades working literally on top of each other and no one from the board of public service or anybody from the city managing these people to make sure they don't step on each other's work and damage it, because that's what they did," Sommers told KMOX. "They compromised a 12 inch gas main, they compromised the sewer, then sewer came back and fixed it, which then broke the brand new water pipe."

Curt Skouby, St. Louis's Director of Public Utilities, tells KMOX repairs are ongoing and should be finished by this weekend.

Lindell will be closed between Union and Kingshighway until then.

The recent water main break happened on Tuesday and on Wednesday a motorist accidently drove his truck past the warning signs and into the large hole. The driver was ok and helped out of the hole. His truck had to be lifted out with a backhoe.

On July 25, 2019, in nearly the same spot, water was flooding across the street due to a water main break. A large hole opened up on the street and the surrounding area looked as if an earthquake struck, as it is rippled with some water flowing out of the cracks.
