ST. LOUIS (KMOX) -- Police confiscated two weapons from a Washington University student Tuesday.

The university says it investigated after receiving "information about potential weapons on campus." Authorities searched the Phi Delta Theta fraternity house and discovered an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. A handgun was found in a vehicle parked in a nearby garage.

The AR-15 was not loaded according to a university spokeswoman, but the gun in the vehicle was loaded. The university says there was never an active threat, but noted it's a "very serious violation of university policy" and the guns have been confiscated.

The student to whom the guns belong, who's not been identified, has been suspended and removed from campus pending formal adjudication.

Phi Delta Theta has also been informed it's been permanently suspended from campus, members are being asked to vacate the chapter house immediately.
