ST. LOUIS (KMOX) -  The St. Louis Blues have traded goalie Jake Allen to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for two draft picks in the 2020 NHL Draft.

The Blues will also send their seventh-round pick in 2022 to Montreal.

Allen had one year left on his contract with St. Louis and the team has cleared some cap space by moving him. His departure could be a major step in re-signing captain Alex Pietrangelo to a long-term contract.

He is second all-time in Blues history for shutouts, with 21, trailing only Brian Elliott's 25.

The 30-year-old was drafted by the Blues in the second round (34th overall) in the 2008 NHL Draft. He has played his entire career with St. Louis, posting a 148-94-26 record and a 2.50 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage in 289 career regular-season games. He was part of last year's Stanley Cup championship team.

Blues fans have taken to social media to thank Allen for his time in St. Louis:

"I want to personally thank Jake for his dedication to the St. Louis Blues organization during his entire time as a Blue," said Armstrong. "He has always been a top-tier professional who has done everything we have asked of him. We wish Jake and his wife Shannon nothing but the best in Montreal."

Allen has been the Blues backup goalie since the rise of Jordan Binnington in January 2019.
