SPANISH LAKE, Mo. (KMOX) — A suspected carjacker is shot and killed by an off-duty St Louis City Sheriff's deputy in Spanish Lake.

Police say a 67-year-old man and child were carjacked, and the driver took off in the stolen truck. A short time later, the victim and his grandson were walking along the sidewalk when the suspect suddenly turned around on Bellefontaine Road, crossed over two lanes, and hit the man. Then, the suspect ended up crashing into the yard of a nearby home.

Police say the suspect, who was armed, got out and ran, but a off-duty St. Louis Sheriff's deputy with a different department caught up to the suspect and fired his weapon, hitting the suspect.

The suspect was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The carjacking victim was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. His grandson wasn't hurt.

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that the suspect was shot by a St. Louis County officer. The story has since been corrected.
