POLICE: Illinois trooper has died after being shot in East St. Louis

Multiple suspects are in custody.

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOX/AP) updated Friday 7 p.m. — An Illinois State Police trooper has died after he was shot while trying to serve a search warrant in East St. Louis, Ill. early Friday morning.

ISP identified the officer as Nicholas Hopkins, who was transported to St. Louis University Hospital after he was shot in the 1400 block of North 42nd Street, according to police.

Hopkins, 33, was a 10-year veteran of the ISP and was a native of Waterloo, Ill.

Three suspects are in custody, police said. 

KMOX's Brian Kelly reported officers are looking for at least one more suspect. 

SWAT officials used a flash bang just before 1 p.m. in an effort to end a standoff with a suspect. The situation is ongoing, as of 6 p.m.

Police shutdown the area around 5:40 a.m. Neighbors said they heard the initial shots fired around 5 a.m.

In a statement following the shooting, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker noted state troopers display unbelievable courage and "put their lives on the line for us every single day.'' 

"Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this dangerous, active situation in East St. Louis and every day,'' he said. 

A statement posted to Facebook from ISP said, "Illinois State Police Acting Director Brendan Kelly asks the public to please be respectful of the family in this trying time and to keep all involved in this incident in your thoughts and prayers."

The shooting Friday, was the second of an Illinois State trooper this month. 

A suburban Chicago man has been charged with attempted murder for shooting and wounding an Illinois state trooper who was serving a warrant at the man's home. 

The wounded trooper was with other officers attempting to serve the warrant Aug. 15 at the home of Volodymyr Dragan, 43, of Wheeling when someone inside fired shots, striking a trooper in the arm. Dragan is being held without bond. 

The officer was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that weren't life-threatening. 

In addition to attempted murder, Dragan also is charged with aggravated battery with a firearm to a police officer, aggravated unlawful restraint and aggravated assault of a police officer.
