(KMOX) - If you live in the Metro East and your driver's license or registration has expired, or you need to take a driver's test, you'll be able to take care of all of that beginning next Tuesday, June 2.

That's when the Department of Motor Vehicles' offices in southern Illinois will reopen for the first time since March 17. Those in the Chicago area will open Monday, June 1.

Through July 31, the facilities will focus on serving only new drivers, customers with expired driver's licenses/ID cards and vehicle transactions.

Spokesman Dave Drucker tells KMOX they will be taking steps to make sure you can conduct your business safely. "We're very aggressively cleaning the facilities. Our employees are all going to be wearing masks. There will be social distancing maintained at the facilities, with marks on the floors. We'll limit the number of people coming into the buildings and we are requiring customers who come in to wear masks, as well."

Extra precautions will also be taken for those taking drivers' tests. "We would ask the person being examined to come in with a mask. There will be sheeting our employee will place over the passenger side of the car for them to sit on. It will be removed when the examiner got out of the car."

And while the offices will be open, Drucker suggests you still try to avoid them, if you can. "If they're looking for a Real ID and their birthday isn't until later in the year, hold off coming in. We have a number of services that can be done online. The annual vehicle registration, that can be done online at cyberdriveillinois.com."
