"And we've seen a lot of first-time (gun owners) and people who have no experience with a firearm."

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - It's been well documented that firearms sales have been on the rise since early March, but you might be surprised to hear who has been buying guns. According to the president and chief instructor of a local firearm training and education center, he's seeing a lot more first-time gun buyers, a lot of them are women and a lot of them are nurses.

"Because they're going into these hospitals now that are closed to the public, you don't have the normal traffic going in and out like you had before," says Kevin Cummins, President and chief instructor at Advantage Firearms Education and Training. "So when they're leaving, sometimes at night, sometimes during the day, they're going into a somewhat vacant parking garage where someone could be lurking and they've got fears of that."

Cummins says it's not unusual for sales to pick up when the economy goes bad because people feel the need to protect themselves.

He says sport shooting is also on the rise because there's not much else to do.

Cummins says the uptick in overall gun sales started in early March when many states announced stay-at-home orders. He says many buyers are from impoverished neighborhoods.

"They're afraid the police aren't going to be able to protect them and they're going to be overrun," Cummins says. "And we've seen a lot of first-time (gun owners) and people who have no experience with a firearm."

He believes the rise in sales is not from those fearing a crackdown by a new administration in Washington, because most gun owners he's talked to believe President Donald Trump will easily win re-election.
