NEAR HAMEL, Ill. (KMOX) -- Interstate 55 near Route 143 in the Metro East was shut down in both directions for hours Wednesday as a four-vehicle crash injured two people, one seriously.
Illinois State Police say a 31-year-old man from Lafayette, Louisiana driving a Freightliner truck with a trailer attached rear ended a Nissan Altima in the construction zone, setting off a chain reaction that also involved an SUV and another Freightliner.

It's unclear why the driver of the first semi rear ended the Altima, but he was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital with serious injuries. Police say his identity isn't being released yet due to the severity of his injuries.

The Altima's driver, 54-year-old Janet Dunaway of Benld, was sent to a St. Louis hospital via ambulance with minor injuries.
The other two people involved in the crash refused medical treatment.

It's unclear whether any charges are pending.
