KA-BOOM: Missouri imports more fireworks than any state in the US

According to a report by finance website, ValuePenguin.com, Missouri imports more than $51 million worth of fireworks last year.

    ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Missouri imported $51,088,748 in fireworks last year, the most of any state in the U.S., according to a finance website ValuePenguin.com.

    The Show-Me State is the most firework-hungry state, with a the value of imported fireworks per capita at $8.34 it's nearly $3 more than the next closest state. Illinois is near the bottom of the list, with just $0.24 of imported fireworks per capita.

    The report also comes with some warning for those planning an at-home fireworks display. 

    • There are an estimated 10,000 ER visits due to firework-related injuries in 2019. This is an increase of 10% from 2018 though still lower than the estimated 12,900 injuries in 2017.
    • In 2019, 25% of those injuries are estimated to occur on July fourth with around 73% occurring between mid June to Mid July.
    • Roughly 34% of injuries on July Fourth happen to children under the age of 10. Males are slightly more likely to be hurt than women, making up 57% of Fourth of July injuries.
