Mozeliak: Reyes, Martinez are going to get an opportunity to make Opening Day rotation

Alex Reyes has said he'll be "ready from day 1" this spring and Martinez is trying return to being a top-of-the rotation starter.

JUPITER, Fla. (KMOX) - If all parties are healthy, it looks like a four-man battle for the fifth spot in the St. Louis Cardinals 2020 starting rotation. Those names would be Kwang-Hyun Kim, Carlos Martinez, Daniel Ponce de Leon and Alex Reyes.

The first four are likely going to be Jack Flaherty, Miles Mikolas, Dakota Hudson and Adam Wainwright, although that comes with no confirmation from Cardinals brass.

"You don't look at just the next 40 days as simply as this is an open tryout. But you also want to recognize that this does create some opportunity for players to have a chance," John Mozeliak says.

In the audio at the top of this page, you can hear more of what the Cardinals president of baseball operations had to say about both Martinez's and Reyes' opportunity to win that fifth spot.

On Martinez:

"(If Carlos Martinez pitches really well) I would say he's likely going to be in the rotation. I mean that's what he wants to do and so we're giving him that opportunity ... Clearly when you look at what he was once like when he was a starter, he was really good."

On Reyes:

"The answer is, it is possible (that Reyes makes the Opening Day rotation). It's unlikely, but it is possible ... In someone like Reyes' case, you want to see that he's healthy. You want to see that velocity is coming back. You want to see that he has command of his offspeed pitches. Because if so, everyone remembers seeing him when he was good, he can be a dominating force."

Only those two, KK and Ponce de Leon will be able to answer the question of who will be the fifth starter, but Mozeliak cautioned fans to be patient on when that decision will be made because the club will not be in any rush to name a final rotation.
